Lennox Head Flying Site - Ballina Class D Airspace Changes
All Flying at Lennox Head as of the 9th of July 2026 is to cease until further notice by order of CASA and Air Services Australia.
New controlled airspace will come into effect at Ballina Airport from 9 July 2026, with the introduction of Class D controlled airspace extending over the Lennox Head flying site. This change will significantly affect hang gliding and paragliding operations at Lennox Head.
The Northern Rivers Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club (NRHGPGC) has applied to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for exemptions that would allow continued hang gliding and paragliding operations within the new Class D airspace - These applications are currently under assessment.
Until these exemptions have been considered and approved, no hang gliding or paragliding operations are to take place at Lennox Head. Accordingly, the site will be closed to all flying activities from Thursday, 9 July 2026 until further notice. This applies to all pilots, including local, interstate and international visitors.
NRHGPGC, SAFA, CASA and Airservices Australia are continuing to work together to establish an operational framework that will enable the site to reopen safely and legally under the new airspace arrangements. Recent correspondence indicates that CASA is currently assessing the exemption application.
While this process is underway, it is critically important that pilots respect the closure as any flying activity from Lennox Head while the exemption applications are under consideration could jeopardise the approval process and may result in the withdrawal of the applications, placing future access to the site at risk.
Further information will be provided as soon as the exemption process has been finalised and an outcome is known. Pilots are encouraged to monitor club website and Australian National Site Guide for updates.
