Australian Capital Territory - Canberra and NSW surrounds

Name Location Type Closed
Lake George (Collector) About 40 minutes north of Canberra on the road to Sydney. Inland Ridge August 2022 - Temporary closure. The whole landing area has been closed to us by the land owner until the Foot and Mouth risk has subsided. This means we have no landing area for this site and we can't glide out to any other landings. We are better to close the whole site even to XC pilots as if they dont climb out they would risk losing the site by contraveening the landowners wishes. The gate has already been locked so we have no physical access. The landowner/ farm manager will happily let us back onto the site once this risk has subsided.
Lake George (Geary's Gap) About 30 minutes north of Canberra on the road to Sydney. Inland Ridge PILOT NOTIFICATION RE TEMPORARY SITE CLOSURE - DECEMBER 2015: Please be advised that launching or landing on the escarpment from Geary's site at Lake George is not to be used until further notice. Yass Valley Council have formally advised the ACTHPA that paragliding and hang gliding operations are not to be conducted from that site until such time as the necessary permissions have been established. This does not affect operations from the South launch and activities can continue as usual from this launch. The ACTHPA Committee have been working with the Yass Council and we will respond accordingly. Significant updates that change the status of flying operations will be provided as they come to hand, and regular updates on progress will be reported at club meetings. I am seeking your understanding and support by not flying at this site at this time, so as to not compound and complicate the matter further. To assist the committee in maintaining the site, one of the factors is to demonstrate how long we have been flying at the site by providing evidence. Anyone that has evidence of us Hang Gliding before 1970 can you please approach the ACTHPA committee with details? Thank you. Please note: there is no camping allowed on the lake bed.

Please refer to http://www.acthpa.org for current status of this site.

Within controlled airspace around Moorabbin airport. As per Section 4.7 (e), Section 6.5.10 and Section 6.5.11 of the SAFA Operations Manual, flying within 16 km of a controlled aerodrome or below 3000 feet within 8 km of an aerodrome with regular public transport services is prohibited. This is regardless of whether flights are below 300 feet or greater than 25 metres from roads or buildings.

In 2010, the VHPA applied for an exemption for this site. CASA declined, stating: "The area surrounding Red Bluff and Mentone is one of high traffic density with both fixed wing and helicopter traffic transiting, often at 500 to 600 feet, as well as being in close proximity to final approach of the NDB A approach. Given these circumstances and the potential impact on the safety of other airspace users CASA cannot approve the establishment of hang gliding and paragliding operations at these locations, even with the controls proposed in your application."

Western Australia - Albany and South Coast

Name Location Type Closed
Dingo's Beach Near Albany. Coastal Ridge The National Parks service currently do not allow flying from this site, which previously offered an alternative to Shelley beach in stronger winds. The only way to fly it now is to fly across from Shelley Beach (it’s the next beach to the east). If interested in flying here contact HGAWA to see if it can be included as a flying site in future revisions of the National Park Management plan. Fantastic white beach, away from the tourists, and enough rocks around the edge for a little thermal or two.
Stirlings About 100km N of Albany. Inland Ridge The biggest hills in the southwest, but access for flying has not been agreed with the National Park authorities. The National Park Management plan specifically forbids flying from Bluff Knoll and Hamilla Hill, although it has been flown from in the past. The Park management plan has provision to work with the HGAWA to approve flying sites in the Park in future. Please contact the HGAWA if .you are interested in doing this. The peaks are mostly covered with low scrub, in a few places it is possible for a paraglider to launch if you don't mind the possibility of line damage. Landing options are also few and far between, but there are some old gravel pits beside the main roads which provide reasonable landing grounds. The National Park does not permit landing in car parks or on roads. Towing up nearby and trying to thermal across the ranges is an option, but landings areas could still be a problem.
